Rate and comment on this application!

Now also with Solar System objects (all planets, the Sun and the Moon) and real-time calculation of lots of astronomic data!

Easily locate stars, planets, constellations, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, asterisms, meteor shower radiants, and more.

Just select the object of your interest and the program will instantly point you to where exactly in the sky it is located. Simply follow the indicators - turn in the direction and look at the altitude shown and... there you have it! The application uses your phone's sensors (GPS, compass, orientation sensor and accelerometer) to monitor in real time your movement and guide you directly to the object you want to find.

StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan

You've heard so many times about Sirius or Vega, or the Pleiades or Hyades, or M31 Andromeda Galaxy, or the Gemini constellation, but you were never able to find them in the sky or it's been always taking you a lot of time? Can't locate Venus or Saturn? Not anymore!

StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan

StarFinder supports all 88 constellations, 72 brightest stars, 21 brightest Messier objects (all visible with the naked eye, i.e. up to +6th apparent magnitude), 20 most popular asterisms, and 26 meteor shower radiants. And in its new version now also all planets + Pluto, the Sun and the Moon.

StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan

For each object useful astronomical information is provided, such as coordinates (right ascension and declination), constellation, Bayer/Messier/NGC designation, distance from Earth, apparent and absolute magnitude, visibility (latitudes at which the object can be seen), occurence and intensity (in case of meteor showers), and also a short description and a direct one-tap link to related Mobile Wikipedia article, should you need more details. Rise / set / transit times (and transit altitude) are also calculated for each object.

Additionally, for all Solar System bodies the program now calculates in real time a range of data, such as: apparent magnitude, apparent diameter, distance from the Earth and from the Sun, phase / illumination, hour angle, right ascension and declination, elongation, phase angle. Many other important details are also provided, including: orbital period, rotation period, orbit eccentricity, axial tilt, orbit inclination, mean radius, surface gravity, mean density, and more.

StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan StarFinder Pro 2.0 (+ Solar System) for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan

The application will be updated regularly with additional stars, meteor shower radiants, all 110 Messier objects, and further Solar System members like e.g. Eris or Ceres. In one of the next versions an option to add custom objects by the user will also be added.

Supports either the GPS receiver or manually entered geographic coordinates, at user's option. Uses magnetometer sensor, orientation sensor and accelerometer along with precise calculation algorithm to track positions of sky objects for any geographic location at any time and to monitor phone's location and orientation in real-time, in order to point the user directly to the selected object.

Includes magnetometer sensor calibration screen. Designed to save battery life - pauses calculations when the user switches to other screens, slows down timers by 10 times when the application is in the background.

OK... I have been followint the discussions about JOLLA phones, and noticed that BurningPlatform has ordered on too. As I have still working N9, that I like, and I am somehow waiting (maybe not receiving) the SailFish for mine, I'd like to support your "upgrade"... I'd like to get StarFinder Pro 2.x and pay directly to you, not to Ovi. I'd like to pay IBAN, if possible, and then you could deliver the software to me... Is that possible? Please contact me at ehaapani(at)gmail(dot)com if you are still selling this program to me... [No rate]

@ Aleve Sicofante: this program's purpose is different. It is meant to point to the object one wants to find. For instance, you want to find the Pleiades (or M31 Andromeda Galaxy, or Jupiter, or Spica constellation, etc.) in the sky, so you select it from the list and the application points you precisely to where it is in the sky. This way the program can be used to e.g. quickly set up a telescope to the object one wants to look at, so it is helpful for all those with telescopes (or binoculars) without automatic positioning systems. The application also shows when an object is visible from observer's location (its rise and set times), its visual magnitude, and many other data. So it is first of all an aid for sky watchers, and not just an app to show what's visible in the direction one is looking in. [No rate]

No way to simply point the phone into the sky and see a map with labeled stars? Just like iOS and Android similar apps do? [Rate: 5/10]

@ peq: It's not "always the newest". It's simply a way to feature/recommend an application. Make a good app yourself and we'll be more than happy to feature it the same way. [No rate]

Would be great if it would be able to tell me what are the stars near thoose I already know. A moveable active map would be great. Now I can only see stars I already know about :-(. [Rate: 6/10]

@ David Moore: the application does support the tilt angle. The elevation arrow changes to green when the phone is pointed at the right altitude (i.e. tilted by the right angle). [No rate]

The application did not seem to support the tilt angle but the compass and GPS will help to locale the star/planet, just need a clear sky! [Rate: 7/10]

@ Metaldeth: at the moment the application is only available via the Nokia Store. This may change in the near future, however it will take some time as for individual distribution a registration/activation system will have to be added to the application to protect it. In the meantime, if you have problems with using your credit cards on the Nokia Store, maybe you can use their operator billing based payment method? [No rate]

Is there a way to buy the application anywhere other than Nokia Store ? My credit cards are refused by the Store for some strange reasons, whereas I can buy on other online store. I have contacted the support but I have not got any answer. Thank you. [No rate]

Didn't realize the elevation was supposed to go green as well - it's possible that I've never held it stable enough! An indication of the current phone elevation (either numerically or a second arrow) would be quite useful to home in on the right value in the same way as the compass.. [No rate]

@ Nux: Yes, the application DOES use the sensors (which is written in the description): GPS for obtaining user's location (unless the user prefers to disable GPS and enter the location manually), compass for obtaining user's azimuth, and orientation sensor & accelerometer sensor for obtaining the angle (altitude) at which the phone is pointed. How the program works is really simple: the user selects an object from the built-in database (a star, a planet, a constellation, etc.) and the program instantly calculates and shows (updated in real-time) using the azimuth and elevation indicators (arrows) in which direction (azimuth) the user has to turn and at which angle (altitude/elevation) the user has to look to see the selected object. Just follow the two arrows, i.e. turn to the azimuth shown and raise the phone to the altitude shown (both arrows will change their colour to green when the phone is pointed to the right azimuth and altitude) and you will SEE the selected object RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, DIRECTLY BEHIND YOUR PHONE. *It is THAT simple*. There is no need for any additional "sophisticated" functionality, because the two arrows are JUST ENOUGH to locate the selected object WITHIN SECONDS and SPOT ON, and with as high precision as only Nokia N9's sensors can provide. I'm not sure if there is any simpler method to locate objects in the sky than how this program does it, probably not. Please see comments/ratings of those who already bought the program, both on this page and in the Nokia Store - all reviews are positive and everyone is satisfied with how the application works (except for one Polish guy at the Nokia store who didn't understand what this program's purpose is and thought it was a Google Sky Map clone). Live view functionality isn't (currently) present, because the purpose of this program is to QUICKLY LOCATE (FIND) an object you want to find (e.g. Sirius or Mars), not to just show what is visible where you look at, so that you have to "scan" half of the sky to find what you are looking for. I am developing live view functionality RIGHT NOW, but I haven't yet decided whether I will add it to StarFinder or release it as a separate application, as live view ISN'T NEEDED for what this program is meant for, i.e. to INSTANTLY POINT YOU TO THE OBJECT you want to find. If added to this program, it would be just an EXTRA feature, beyond the program's main purpose. Regarding video demoing the functionality of this program, I will make it soon. I hope I was able to answer all your questions clearly enough :-) [No rate]

The new version with the solar system rounds out what is a superb app. I pay more for a coffee at Starbucks so I can't understand people who think the price is unreasonable (and you get to use it more than once - unlike the coffee!) [Rate: 10/10]

The description doesn't give clear idea of how does the star locating work. Could somebody clarify if it uses compass AND accelerometer AND (preferably) show you live view of a sky map (augmented reality)? Or maybe it simply give some clues on where the star/planet is and you have to use other tools to really locate the star? Or even better - could somebody post a movie? [No rate]

@ void: The problem with Nokia Store is that they have very different prices for different countries. People in Germany pay almost FIVE TIMES more than people in India, and almost twice more than people in e.g. Czech Republic, Russia or Australia, for ANY application in the Nokia Store. Why is it so? We have no idea, only Nokia can answer this question... This app costs ~ 0,90 in India and even less in Malaysia. Due to this, a developer hardly gets 2 per copy on average, especially that the price incluses Nokia's 30% commission and VAT tax (up to 25%) which get deducted from developer's earnings. Please also note that MeeGo Harmattan is such a small platform that applications of this kind only gets several hundred copies sold in the very best case. And it took over 3 months to make this application.... Anyway, if I am not mistaken 5 is what a pack of cigarettes or two glasses of beer costs in a pub in Germany, so is it really THAT MUCH for a useful app like this one? A cardboard star finder costs like 1,99 and it isn't a fraction as functional... [No rate]

i'm really intressted in this app. but to be honest, for me, the price is way to expensive. there isn't even a demo to test it. i don't wanna buy a pig in a poke. maybe someday, when its available for 1,99 i would buy it. i know it is much work for such an app, but its just my personal point of view, not to pay 5 for apps. Installed easily, none of the recent Ovi store hassles (in Canada as well BTW). Some panes a little small for easy scrolling of long lists. Addition of the planets would make this a must-have in my opinion, but does what it says very well.. [Rate: 8/10]
