I can beat every free chess engine available in the BlackBerry App World at their highest strength settings. These types of chess programs which target mainstream players are not available on the N9 as far as I can tell. If you have heard of the Houdini or HIARCS engines, then you know we're talking beyond mainstream. These high level chess programs are available for the iOS and they are coming to the Android (if they are not already there). A strong contender standing among them is the Stockfish chess engine. iOS has it (Stockfish 2.4) and Android has it (Droidfish 1.44 with Stockfish 2.2.2). Fortunately for us, the N9 has its own version (Jose Mobile with Stockfish 2.2.1). It's geared towards chess players with rated strengths of 1600 and higher. Good luck beating Jose at its lowest strength setting. It's also not programmed as an analysis engine, so you can't set up positions to analyse. However, you can still force moves to get to a position then analyse it - not convenient but it works. Droidfish has slightly more options. As I said previously, it's not targeted for mainstream players. The iOS, the BlackBerry OS and the Android do have chess programs that don't totally have you outclassed. For the N9, you can only play against master level courtesy of Jose Mobile. Jose does have its quirks as noted by two previous reviewers, but they are minor issues. Read the Online Help in the app solves most of them. [Rate: 9/10]

Found a way to overcome the suspended thinking. When it jams (and no button presses make any difference)just quit the app and reload. Then press the 'think' button. It will start to work again. [No rate]

When playing against the computer it jams sometimes and is unable to make any move. [Rate: 6/10]
