NOTE: In early 2011, Myriad announced Alien Dalvik's availability as "later this year". Unfortunately, the software still has not been released and no further information on its availability was given. Rumour has it that Myriad wanted to sell licences to phone makers. As apparently no phone manufacturer was interested in buying Alien Dalvik, it is unknown if Myriad will decide to ever start selling individual copies to end users or maybe cancel the project... If you'd like to know more, we can only suggest that you try to contact Myriad and ask them...

Original description follows:

Myriad Group AG announced the launch of Myriad Alien Dalvik, enabling Android apps to run on non-Android platforms. The product was publicly demoed running on the Maemo-based Nokia N900.

Myriad Alien Dalvik for Nokia N9 / N950 / MeeGo Harmattan

From a user perspective, Alien Dalvik is completely transparent. Alien Dalvik applications appear as native and can be seamlessly installed on device without user disruption.

Building on the launch of Dalvik Turbo, Alien Dalvik signifies Myriad's latest Android innovation by enabling Android apps to operate on a much wider range of platforms and devices. As a result, operators, OEMs and application store owners can now easily access the Android ecosystem and deploy Android applications across multiple device operating systems, all without compromising performance.

Alien Dalvik enables the majority of Android applications to run unmodified, allowing application store owners to quickly kick start Android application store services by simply repackaging Android Package (APK) files.

From a user perspective, Alien Dalvik is completely transparent. Alien Dalvik applications appear as native and can be seamlessly installed on device without user disruption. All the user sees is that he now has access to a wider range of applications.

Somehow I think that myriad group has made a advertising stunt of some kind. But its not to benefit the Nokia N9 users. The program will never ever get on the market for the individual N9 user - because Myriad dont dare to go against Nokia - and Nokia is not interested in buying - just to support android. [No rate]

@ Bhudi: you are wrong. On Android, a lot of software is written in Java and runs in a Java Virtual Machine called Dalvik VM. Myriad's Alien Dalvik is more or less an unofficial port of Dalvik Java VM and as such it can be installed on MeeGo (or Symbian, or other platforms) and make it possible for Android Java software to run on it. There is no need for any kind of "emulator", because Android platform uses the same processor architecture (ARM) and similar Linux-based operating system. All that's needed is a port of the Java Virtual Machine (in which Java software runs like in a "sandbox"), and that's what Alien Dalvik provides. So technically it is 100% possible. Why Myriad don't want to start selling it to end users, is a different story. [No rate]

Myriad group is making big publicity... there is no such concept where you install a patch on the maemo or meego systems to make andoid apps work, it's only what they want you to think... to emulate a software you need the actual emulator to be opened, just like wvm for earlier windows systems... wake up guys! it's nothing... Loks bad for Alien Dalvic... I've heared that it won't come up ad Ovi-Store cause it's gonna be sold only to large companies and not to the Customers... I'm still hoping that it will come up at Ovi-Store cause N9 is a verry good Phone, but without Apps :( Seems like Nokia don't want the Phone to be successfull, cause it wouldn't be good for their Micro$hit-Strategy... @ Ross: First of all, this page only quotes what Myriad officially announced, and never changed/cancelled/denied. So if it is falsely misleading as you wrote, then it is Myriad misleading people as it is them who publicly promised the release this year, did not fulfil the promise and didn't even bother to inform anyone about either changing their plans or cancelling the project... Also, please know that I was waiting for this software just as much as you and everyone else. So I feel disappointed and misled not less than anyone else. Regarding the "Available later this year" text, it became clear only very recently that the software won't be released this year. It was NOT that clear even just a month ago as even though we did not believe that Nokia would buy it, we hoped that Myriad would start selling it individually as it would surely sell well and provide them huge profits. I really had no reasons not to trust a company that publicly demoed the product running on the N900 and officially announced its availability for MeeGo in 2011, and I really had no reasons to think that such a great and wanted product would be killed only because Myriad wants to sell it to Nokia and does not bother to sell individual copies. They said "later this year" so I was patiently waiting, just like everyone else, knowing just as little as everyone else. YES, I will change the text now to "Availability date unknown, please contact the developer for details", but I really had no reasons to change it in October or November as I am not a clairvoyant and I simply did not know Myriad's plans at that point. Once again, it's Myriad to blame for promising something and failing to deliver (without a word of explanation), and not this site for just INFORMING about Myriad's public promise... [No rate]

@Michal, I agree with you completely on Myriads naivety, and given what you've said you's have noble intentions. However this page still say's that Alien Dalvik will be commercially available later this year, with no update on the real story behind it, hence when people see this page they assume all is fine and well, that it's not necessary to hound Myriad since we're reading right here that it's coming to N9 regardless. While your intentions are good they can't come to fruition when you haven't stated that on this page. One further thing to note, when I purchased my N9 I was under the impression from this article that we would be able to run android apps eventually, I wonder how many other's were falsely misled. As a previous N900 owner it was a no-brainer that I'd get the N9 regardless, hence I don't care so much, for others that may not be the case, but still this page isn't helping beyond pushing the concept of Alien Dalvik, as you hadn't told us Myriads plan and that further effort was required by the consumer. For the record I'm not even complaining about Myriads naivety, I'm complaining that this article is misleading people and no ones bothering to correct the page. Just look at the comments, no one had any idea, while certainly it's cleared up now in the comments, xyz's comment shows while people might even go as far as posting a comment, they don't necessarily read any of them. This site is a good resource and I still recommend it to others all the same. [No rate]

@ Ross: yes, we are well aware of Myriad's plans (or actually: naive hopes). However, we are also well aware that no manufacturer, and SURELY NOT NOKIA, will ever buy this software for their phones. If Nokia ever wanted to buy this stuff, they would have already done it long ago, before the N9 started shipping. They haven't, because they have absolutely no interest in making people use Android software instead of buying native apps in the Ovi store, which brings Nokia quite a decent profit. And under Microsoft reign, I guess Nokia is the LAST company that would like to support Android software. Long story short, either Myriad finally understand it and start selling individual copies of Alien Dalvik to end users, or they'll have to just ditch it as they SURELY won't sell it to any phone maker. We believe that there are some wise people at Myriad who'll understand it sooner or later, so we keep this software listed, even just for Myriad to see how many people are interested in it. If Myriad offered this app for $30 for MeeGo and Symbian, I bet they'd sell tens of thousands of copies and earn some nice round $1 million, which is definitely much better than just cancelling the project. But maybe they need some feeback from end users -- so instead of complaining maybe people should start sending emails to them requesting that they finally release it? [No rate]

Hey My-Meego, have you considered fact checking this article or your sources? It's been known for a while now that Myriads intensions are to try sell Alien Dalvik as OEM software, meaning they want the manufacturers to buy the software and support it, this means they don't plan on making an app that you can simply purchase from Ovi store for example. You should update your article so that everyone reading this for the first time don't get false expectations. [Rate: 0/10]
